The brain is a unique organ of the body.

It has three main types of cells.

We all know about neurons, the cells that control how we move, feel, and think, as well as automated bodily functions like heartbeat and digestion. While neurons make up only a minority of our cells, our brains also contain astrocytes and microglial cells that support neurons.

Astrocytes are star-shaped cells that supply nutrients to nervous tissue, regulate blood flow to the brain, and contribute to brain and spinal cord repair after physical trauma or infection, among other things, while microglia are crucial for maintaining the brain as a whole, constantly sweeping the brain looking for signs of infection.

Experiencing trauma, such as a physical or emotional blow to the body or mind or an infection, sets in motion a series of processes that ultimately lead to increased activity of microglial cells, causing inflammation in the brain. This inflammation can last for years and its symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fainting, forgetfulness, loss of concentration, insomnia, and general fatigue, among others.

Inflammation in the body is most commonly eliminated through massage and heat therapy, which stimulate the flow of fluid beneath the muscle membranes. These treatments help the body's lymphatic system transport fluid containing white blood cells throughout the body. This fluid, called "lymph," not only helps fight infections in the body, but also helps remove toxins, waste, and other unwanted substances.

Until recently, it was thought that the brain did not have a lymphatic system. However, recent research has shown that the brain does have a "glymphatic" system that allows the brain to flush out neurotoxins (such as heavy metals, infectious organisms, and harmful chemicals) and "bad" proteins (such as amyloid beta protein), which contribute to Alzheimer's disease.

A trained osteopathic practitioner can feel the position and movement of the 23 bones of the skull to assess the overall health of the brain, and through methodical kneading, accelerate the flow of fluids under the dura, easing the symptoms of brain trauma (both physical and emotional) so common in modern society.

Osteopathic cranial treatment typically lasts 30-45 minutes, but longer-term improvement requires longer-term treatment.

BREO's scalp massagers replicate the movements of leading osteopathic practitioners in handheld and wearable models, allowing users to replicate the relaxation of osteopathic cranial therapy in the comfort of their own home at a fraction of the cost.
